Branches, papier mache, wire, paper paint, threads
H 45” x W 32” x d 11”

This, the first in a series, began with the armature. One day I was picking up fallen birch branches in my yard. I held two up together and they said, “Hello. We would like to be covered in white papier mache and kind of fused together where we intersect.” So I said, “Okay.”
I was happy with the results but over time felt that the armature should be supporting something and maybe a little color would be nice so I added the vine.
I could go on about the significance of the primary colors on the leaves and the symbology of the vine and fruits but mostly I was looking for something that would look good hanging over the fireplace. This did lead on to other pieces and a more sculptural direction in my work. Fruits of the vine.
